Meet Claire Wolters

Claire Wolters is a writer, reporter, and creative based in Brooklyn, NY. She freelances articles on health and housing for The New York Times and US News and World Report, and has bylines in multiple renowned publications, including National Geographic, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Hill, and Verywell Health.

Claire has extensive journalism experience, having started her career at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she built a community-driven newsroom alongside hard-working colleagues. The newsroom, aptly named Kensington Voice, elevated the voices of neighbors in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, who said they felt silenced by other news organizations. At Kensington Voice and beyond, Claire has demonstrated how journalists can highlight social issues while still respecting and honoring the often-vulnerable individuals they feature in their stories.
Some of many highlights of her work include a feature story in The New York Times about how some older New Yorkers struggle to hold onto rent stabilized apartments due to finances, health and safety; a feature story in The Philadelphia Inquirer about the impact of laundry services for people experiencing homelessness, a feature story in National Geographic about the mental health toll of being a social media star — before the age of TikTok —, and a front-page special in Lancaster News Paper about how the COVID-19 pandemic created a lonliness epidemic in local nursing homes.

In addition to her reporting, Claire operates a substack where she gets candid about her personal life, often highlighting lessons she's learned about what it means to be physically and mentally healthy. Outside of writing, she is a spare-time illustrator — you can check out some of her work on this website, or on her Instagram, too. Apart from the professional world altogether, Claire loves spending time outdoors and challenging her physical limits. This fall, look for her running in Prospect Park — or this spring, in the Boston Marathon :)
